Wodan/Odin:

Names:	Proto-Germanic: *Wôdanaz ("Raging One") Western Germanic: Gode, Gude, Uuôden (Old Saxon), Wed, Wodan, Wodden, Woden, Woen, Wotan, Woten, Wuotan Eastern Germanic: Gaut, Gauth Northern Germanic: Oden, Odin, Othinn Other: Wodan has a huge number of kennings, amongst whom are Allfather, Graybeard, High One, Lord of the Host, One-eye, Victory father, etc.
God of:	Wisdom, Knowledge, War, Death, Inspiration, Poetry.
Appearance:	Wodan was mostly depicted as a wise old man with one eye and a grey beard. In northern Germanic sources he often wears his blue skycloak and a pointy hat, he wields a spear named Gungnir that is inscribed with the runes of the Elder Fuþark, the tip was forged by a dwarf and the shaft was made of a branch of the world tree Yggdrasil, he also rides on his white eightlegged horse named Sleipnir. In western Germanic sources he is sometimes depicted as a wanderer with a green cloak, though in some legends he also appears as a broadshouldered warrior on horseback, in both cases he also has a grey beard and one eye.

Wodan is the most important god of the Germanic pantheon, he is the high god and the leader of all the other gods.
He is a real wisdom seeker; he travels the nine worlds to gain information and understanding, for Wodan knowledge is power and he was even prepared to sacrifice and eye for it, which he traded with a Giant named Mimir for a draught from his well of wisdom.
Wodan's palace is situated in Asgard where he sits on his throne called Hliðskialf from where he can oversee the nine worlds.
Wodan is associated with ravens, eagles, wolves, and dogs, he has two ravens named Huginn (Memory) and Muninn (Thought) who fly over the nine worlds every day and return in the evening to tell their master what they saw and heard.
The first wolves were also created by Wodan, he named them Geri (Greedy) and Freki (Gluttonous) and they are the ancestors of all wolves, Wodan only drinks wine and gives all his food to them.
Wodan is married to the earthgodess Frija (also known as Frigg, Holda, Berchta, etc.), though he also begot children with other women, he was even believed to have children amongst the humans which was sometimes used as an explanation for some of the extraordinary people that wandered the earth, many heroes were believed to have originated from him.
Many royal houses were also believed to descend from him like for instance those of the Goths, Langobardians, and Anglo-Saxons, though Wodan received most if his worship from the Lower Franconians, Saxons, Frisians, Alemannians, and Suebians.
Wodan also has a darker, more sinister side; he is the god of war and death and he often grants victory to the ones he favours but he sometimes expects their lives in return; the reason he always gives for this actions is "The grey wolf lurks at the palaces of the gods", which refers the demon-wolf Fenrir and the upcoming destruction of the world; he needs fallen warriors for his elite army known as the Einherjar, and with this army he is trying to postphone Ragnarök or at least be able to go down fighting.
It was believed that before the start of a battle Wodan chooses the side that will be victorious by pointing at them with his spear, the 8th century Langobardian writer Paulus Diaconus wrote down a very interesting legend about this in his work "Historia Langobardorum", which I shall now write down:

On the islands of Scandinavia lived a tribe called the Vinils who had grown to such large numbers that they decided that one third of them had to migrate to other lands, they formed three groups and drew lots, the group that had to go chose the two brothers Ibor and Ayo as their leaders and left.
While searching for a new place to live they arrived in the area known as Schoringen where the warlike Vandals lived, the Vandals sent a messenger to the Vinils who told them that they had to pay the Vandals tribute or otherwise do battle.
Ibor and Ayo asked their mother Gambara for advice and eventually they decided that it was better to fight for their freedom than to contaminate it with tribute, and this they told to the Vandals.
Because battle was now inevitable the Vandals asked the god Wodan to grant them victory, and he spoke; "I will grant victory to the first ones I see at sunrise."
On the Vinil side Gambara asked Wodan's wife Frea for victory, and Frea advised that the Vinil women should accompany their men the next morning with their hair untied and arranged across their faces like beards.
At sunrise Wodan looked out of his window and shouted; "Who are these Longbeards?"
His wife Frea then said; "To the ones you give a name, you must also give victory.", so Wodan gave the Vinils victory over the Vandals and from that day onward the Vinils were called Longbeards.

Although Wodan is a god of war he is not explicitely a warrior, he is more the general type who relies more on brain than on muscle, Wodan is also a great magician; he practices a form of magic known as Seið, which he learned from the godess Freya, who is sometimes mentioned as Wodan's wife or his mistress.
Another important role of Wodan is bringing inspiration, in the field of poetry he plays an even greater role than Bragi and it is from him that poets and writers receive their skills and inspiration.
At Ragnarök Wodan is destined to be swallowed by the giant demon-wolf Fenrir, but he will be revenged by his son Vidar who will kick Fenrir to death with his iron boot and tear him in two.
In most northwestern European countries Wednesday is named after Wodan and lots of towns and villages are also named after him like Wenslow ("Wodan's wheelbarrow"), Wednesfield ("Wodan's field"), Wensley ("Wodan's forest"), and Wednesbury ("Wodan's borough") in England, Woensdrecht ("Wodan's watercrossing") in the Netherlands, Odense ("Odin's sanctuary") in Denmark, and Wodensberg ("Wodan's hill") in Germany.
In the Middle Ages Wodan was often referred to as Gode or Gude and a Christianized version of Wodan has long been worshipped under the name of the angel Michael, many churches and cultplaces with names like "St.-Michael's church" or "Michaelsberg" are believed to have a connection to Wodan.
