Wodan was mostly depicted as a wise old man with one eye and a grey beard. In northern Germanic sources he often wears his blue skycloak and a pointy hat, he wields a spear named Gungnir that is inscribed with the runes of the Elder Fuþark, the tip was forged by a dwarf and the shaft was made of a branch of the world tree Yggdrasil, he also rides on his white eightlegged horse named Sleipnir. In western Germanic sources he is sometimes depicted as a wanderer with a green cloak, though in some legends he also appears as a broadshouldered warrior on horseback, in both cases he also has a grey beard and one eye. |
