Is it true that Edison used some of Tesla's inventions as his own?

In 1884, literally within weeks of his arrival in New York City from Europe, Tesla went to work for Thomas Edison.  One of his early assignments was the redesign of some machinery related to Edison's direct current power distribution system.  Tesla's own words best describe what happened next.  "... I designed twenty-four different types of standard machines with short cores and of uniform pattern which replaced the old ones.  The Manager had promised me fifty thousand dollars on the completion of this task but it turned out to be a practical joke.  This gave me a painful shock and I resigned my position."  You can read the complete account in Tesla's autobiography My Inventions.
